The solenoid is the life for any automatic valve. The most notable sign for solenoid replacement is when the valve fails to open or close. When checking to see if you need to replace the solenoid and you notice that it doesn't slide smoothly in and out of the plunger; the solenoid is damaged and it is time to replace it.
